A coastal refuge open to the public.

The Schiller Coastal Studies Center, on Orr’s Island, is a research and teaching facility located on a 118-acre landscape of forest and meadows. The property includes 2.5 miles of rocky coastline, a spruce–fir swamp, early successional communities, an old apple orchard, and red pine, cedar, and oak–pine forest. The marine communities (high intertidal splash zones, rocky shores, mudflats, and eelgrass) are typical of Maine’s sheltered coastal habitats.

The Center is an ideal gathering place for Bowdoin faculty, staff, students, scholars, and community members—particularly those invested in the climate and environment, but also for anyone who appreciates working in a natural setting by the sea.
